Device Dependencies

Map parent-child relationships between monitored devices to suppress alarm notifications for dependent devices when their upstream parent is down, reducing cascading alarm noise.

Overview

Device dependencies in Cloudmon reduce alert noise by suppressing notifications for dependent devices when their parent device is down. When a switch or router that connects a group of servers goes offline, all those servers will also go offline. Without dependencies configured, Cloudmon raises alarms for every server individually in addition to the network device, creating a flood of alerts for a single root cause. With dependencies configured, only the parent device alarm fires while the dependent devices are silenced until the parent recovers.

Navigate to Settings → Configurations → Device Dependencies to configure all device dependency relationships.

Configuring a Dependency

  1. Navigate to Settings → Configurations → Device Dependencies.
  2. Locate the device you want to configure as dependent, or click Add to create a new dependency relationship.
  3. In the Depends On field, specify the parent device that this device relies on for connectivity.
  4. Map the dependent monitors for this device to the dependency relationship.
  5. Click Save.

Once saved, alarms for the dependent device and its monitors will be suppressed whenever the parent device is in a down state. When the parent recovers, alarms for dependent devices resume firing if their conditions are still met.

Device dependencies can also be configured directly when adding or editing a monitored device by using the Depends On field in the device configuration form. This sets the same relationship from the device side rather than from the Settings page.
