How to add "tags" to VMware vCenter and ESXi Hosts in Cloudmon

Overview

Cloudmon allows you to assign Tags to VMware vCenter and ESXi Hosts to help with logical grouping, filtering, reporting, and easier identification of resources.

Tags can be added:

  • At the time of adding a vCenter or ESXi Host, or

  • Later by editing the existing configuration.

Supported Tag Formats

Tags can be defined in either of the following formats:

  • Single-word tags

    • Example: Production, Finance

  • Key:Value pairs (colon-separated)

    • Example: Environment:Prod, Location:Riyadh


Adding Tags While Adding vCenter or ESXi

When adding a new vCenter or ESXi Host in Cloudmon, you can add Tags directly in the Tags field during the initial configuration.

  • Type the tag

  • Press Enter to add it

  • Repeat for multiple tags if required


Adding or Updating Tags for an Existing vCenter

Steps

  1. Navigate to:
    Virtualization > VMware > vCenter

  2. Identify the vCenter to which you want to add or modify tags.

  3. Click Edit under the Actions column.

  4. In the Tags field:

    • Enter the tag.

    • Press Enter for the tag to be added.

  5. Click Save to apply the changes.

  • Customer:Lobara

  • Region:KSA


Adding or Updating Tags for an Existing ESXi Host

Steps

  1. Navigate to:
    Virtualization > VMware > ESXi Host

  2. Locate the ESXi Host you want to update.

  3. Click Edit under the Actions column.

  4. In the Tags field:

    • Enter the tag.

    • Press Enter to add the tag.

  5. Click Save to apply the changes.

Tag Format Guidelines

  • Tags can be single words or colon-separated Key:Value pairs

  • Multiple tags can be assigned to the same vCenter or ESXi Host

  • Always press Enter after typing a tag to ensure it is added

  • Avoid spaces within tags for better consistency


Best Practices

  • Prefer Key:Value tags for clarity and standardization

    • Example: Environment:Prod, Owner:CloudOps

  • Maintain a common tagging convention across environments

  • Use tags to simplify filtering, reporting, and ownership tracking
